On January 1, recreational marijuana use became legal in California. The state now has the largest legal marijuana market in the country.

Customers who buy and consume cannabis may still run afoul of state and local rules that govern where and how the drug can be acquired and consumed.

Here are some suggestions for avoiding it.

Is it legal to buy marijuana in California?

You can buy and possess up to 28.5 grams (a little more than an ounce) of marijuana, up to 8 grams of cannabis concentrate, and up to six live plants if you are 21 or older.

You can buy and possess up to 8 ounces of marijuana and 12 live plants if you are between the ages of 18 and 20, but only through the state’s online dispensary, which requires a physician’s recommendation.

Within their borders, some communities have enacted harsher regulations on the sale and usage of cannabis.

Where can I get it legally?

The state Bureau of Cannabis Control licenses retail businesses.

A map showing the current locations can be found here.

What forms do you mean?

Marijuana that has been dried Dried marijuana, also known as flower, bud, or leaf, is usually sold by the gram or in eighth-ounce increments up to an ounce. Depending on the strain, the price changes significantly.

Concentrates Any product made through an extraction process, in which cannabinoids are extracted from the marijuana plant, leaving behind a compound that is usually far more potent than the dried flower, is referred to as a concentrate.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the major psychoactive element in marijuana, and certain concentrates contain a lot of it. Others are high in cannabidiol, or CBD, a compound valued for its medicinal rather than psychoactive properties.

Hash is made by utilizing freezing water or compression to remove THC-rich resin from the plant. The resultant product is known as rosin hash when heat is introduced to the process.

Drug Enforcement Administration butane hash oil

When cannabinoids are extracted with the chemical solvent butane, butane hash oil is produced. BHO is a strong amber substance that can be waxy, crumbly, or crystalline in texture. It’s also known as honey oil, wax, crumble, or shatter.

Rosin hash and BHO are typically marketed in half-gram amounts in tiny jars or wax paper wraps. Both chemicals can be evaporated or smoked when combined with dry marijuana. They can also be consumed by “dabbing,” which involves vaporizing a tiny amount of the concentrate and inhaling it via a modified bong known as a “oil rig.”

When cannabinoids are extracted from plant material using pressure and carbon dioxide, CO2 oil is produced. CO2 oil is often offered preloaded into vaporizer cartridges or disposable vaporizer pens since it is less viscous than BHO or rosin hash.

Tinctures are alcoholic preparations of cannabis material that are occasionally combined with other herbs that are thought to have medicinal properties. Dropping little amounts under the tongue is the most common method of administration.

Chocolate bars loaded with cannabis Edibles / Peter DaSilva / For The Times Soft drinks, snacks, and chocolates are just a few of the cannabis-infused items on the market.

They must must be prominently labeled and contain no more than 10 milligrams of THC per serving, according to state legislation.

Treatments that are applied to the skin Cannabis-infused creams, lotions, and salves are available for purchase. These medicines are typically marketed as therapies for aches, pains, and skin disorders, rather than as having psychoactive effects, because the active chemicals are absorbed locally through the skin.

Plants that are alive Cannabis is available as plants, seeds, or clones, which are cuttings taken from a mature plant. Consumers are allowed to grow them for personal use as long as they are grown in a secure location that is not visible from any public space.

Is it possible for me to get marijuana delivered?

You certainly can. In California, delivery services are permitted to operate if they are licensed.

How much will I have to pay in taxes?

Recreational users must pay a sales tax of 7.5 percent to 10% (depending on the county) as well as a 15% state excise tax.

Furthermore, cities around the state have began levying their own levies. You may use our calculator to figure out how much you’ll have to pay depending on where you live.

Medical marijuana users are exempt from sales tax, but they must receive a state medical marijuana identification card from the county where they live in addition to the doctors’ prescription required to purchase medical marijuana. Other taxes still apply.

Is it okay for me to smoke outside?

No. It is still unlawful to consume cannabis in public, whether you are a medical or recreational user.

What about in my automobile?

You can’t smoke, vape or ingest cannabis while sitting in a car, driving, or while riding in the passenger seat of a car. That goes for a boat, an airplane, or any other mode of transportation.

Cannabis can be transported in your vehicle, but only in a sealed container or in the trunk. It’s illegal to transport it across state lines, even if it’s legal in another state.

So, where can I get it to smoke (or vape) or eat?

On private property, cannabis can be consumed, but only in regions where cigarette smoking is not forbidden. So, if you’re a renter and your landlord says you can’t smoke in your apartment, you’re probably out of luck. It is also possible for property owners to prohibit the use and possession of cannabis on their premises.

What about cannabis lounges or cafés?

Local governments can allow onsite cannabis consumption if it takes place in an age-restricted area that isn’t visible from any public space and no alcohol or cigarettes is allowed on the premises, according to state law.
